I have now been a missionary in Santiago for almost 4 months, and what an amazing experience it has been. I have tried to sit here and think about what single moment has made this experience so incredible.... and I can't think of just one moment. It has been the sights, the sounds, the victories, the disappointments, the beautiful scenery, the community, new and old friends, and the presence of God here in this place. I have been to a few different places around the world, although I am by no means a seasoned traveler, and the one thing that amazes me is how big God really is.
Here in Santiago, where I have worked in some of the most impoverished area's in the city, it would be hard to believe that there was a God, if I didn't already know Him and His goodness. I think one of the toughest questions we can face as christians is why( among other things), if God is so loving? In Genesis, we read about the fall of mankind. We made a decision that took us away from God. But God was so lonley for us, and so desired direct communion with us, that it says in John 3:16 "For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only son, so that every one who beleives in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life." Since I have been here, I have seen God's hand in so many things. I see Him in the happy, smiling children who play in sewage in the streets. I see Him in the sweet faces of the new born babies I have treated in the medical clinics. I see Him everywhere and in everything, and I thank Him.
